“Listen to my voice, Zheng He.” It had to be a dream, but it didn’t feel so. Before him the seas were revealed under the moonlight from a kind of haze. Upon a great throne of waves, a woman presided over the waters, her face like seashells of gold crowned with clouds, her eyes the bluest of skies. “You shall call me Tianfei,” her voice boomed. She opened her arms and a fleet of crimson ships spread across the horizon. They quickly filled with riches that overflowed into the ocean with a sound loud enough to wake him. Zheng He remembered this vision all his life and, as he traveled the seas of China and beyond at the helm of the imperial treasure fleet, he diligently prayed and made offerings to Tianfei. The Lady of Heaven, in turn, watched over him during his seven expeditions, and received him into her bosom when old age finally returned him to the depths from whence he’d come.
