First was Ginnungagap, the Primordial Void where nothing grew but a single spark of light in the abyss, which sprung and lived despite the onslaught of the dark. One spark soon became two and four, and the emptiness slowly filled with the first living thing, a fledgling plant whose roots and branches fed on the night. From its very heart the waters sprung that would sustain it for the ages, and it kept growing amidst the yawning chasm, long before the jötnar stirred and the gods fashioned creation. With none other to name it, the blooming tree named itself Yggdrasil, for its story had been told and it was both rising and fully grown, and Odin breath-giver was within it before his birth. The ash tree, now an imperishable colossus, bore fruits that expanded to become eight houses, with a ninth serving as its abode. Summoned by its humming, many spirits sought shape and shelter in the nine realms of Yggdrasil and thus the diverse glory of the universe unfolded with its intertwined fates, dramas and tragedies. The Norns have decreed the end of all realms, but no death or destruction shall ever mar the World Tree, whose leaves are green in all seasons as a testament of eternity.
