The Secret Queen

The myths speak of how Persephone, daughter of the Earth Goddess Demeter, was so fascinated by the beauty of flowers and growing things that she descended from her mother’s lofty halls to rejoice in the pleasures of the sensual world. Hades, Lord of the Underworld, was similarly stricken by her majesty and took her to his realm. Although Demeter, in her fury and pain, claimed that her daughter was abducted, Hades didn’t want to spoil Persephone’s glory and offered her a compromise: that he would crown her his Queen and unveil to her the secrets of death so that she would reemerge wiser from her descent. Persephone accepted this compromise, for she knew his words to be true and felt that the Lord’s cold heart blazed with love and passion for her.
